According to INDEXDOTCOM, Alabama is a state located in the southeastern United States, bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. It was admitted as the 22nd state in 1819. The area that would become Alabama was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, and Choctaw. The Spanish were first to explore this region in 1540 and were followed by French explorers who established settlements along the Gulf Coast in what is now Mobile. The area was then ceded to Britain following the French and Indian War (1763–1783). In 1783, it became part of the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between Britain and America during the Revolutionary War. Following this agreement, settlers from Georgia and Tennessee began moving into Alabama in large numbers. In 1817, Alabama was declared a separate territory with its own governor and legislature. Two years later it became a state with Huntsville as its capital city. During this period of time Alabama experienced tremendous growth due to cotton plantations that flourished throughout its borders. Unfortunately this also led to an increase in slavery which eventually caused tension between North and South leading up to Civil War (1861-1865). During this war Alabama was one of 11 Confederate states that seceded from Union prompting President Abraham Lincoln’s decision to issue an emancipation proclamation freeing all slaves within Confederate boundaries. After Reconstruction (1865-1877), Alabama continued expanding its infrastructure including railroads and canals which helped promote industrial growth throughout the 20th century. In addition, during this time period civil rights for African Americans began gaining traction with Rosa Parks’ arrest sparking a bus boycott in Montgomery that lasted over a year (1955-1956). This boycott eventually prompted Congress’ passing of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 which made racial segregation illegal throughout America including Alabama. Today Alabama is known for its strong economy with manufacturing being one of its major industries along with tourism due to its numerous beaches along Gulf Coast as well as many other attractions such as museums and historical sites scattered throughout state.
