According to INDEXDOTCOM, Alaska has a long and varied history that dates back thousands of years. The first inhabitants of Alaska were the Paleo-Eskimo people, who arrived around 8500 BCE. They were followed by the Inuit and Aleut people, who arrived around 2000 BCE. These indigenous peoples lived off the land, hunting and fishing for sustenance. In the late 1700s, Russian explorers began to explore Alaska and set up fur trading posts along its coastlines. In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million in what became known as the “Alaska Purchase.” This purchase was controversial at the time, but it opened up Alaska to American exploration and development. In 1912, Alaska was officially made a U.S. territory and over the next few decades it experienced rapid growth due to its rich natural resources such as oil and gold. In 1959, it officially became a U.S state after Congress passed the Alaska Statehood Act with strong support from Alaskans themselves who wanted to become part of union with other states in America. Since then, Alaska has grown into one of America’s most unique states with its diverse population of Native Alaskans, settlers from all over the world, and beautiful landscapes that range from mountains to glaciers to rainforests.
