According to INDEXDOTCOM, California was first inhabited by Native Americans over 10,000 years ago. Spanish explorers arrived in 1542 and the first mission was established in 1769. Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 and California became a Mexican province until 1848 when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War and Mexico ceded California to the United States. In 1850, California became an official state of the Union and a major population influx followed due to the Gold Rush. During this time, many immigrants from China and other countries arrived as well. Railroads were built connecting much of the state, furthering economic growth and development. By 1900, California had become an agricultural powerhouse with large-scale farming operations producing citrus fruit, rice, wheat, cotton, vegetables and more. The movie industry began to take root in Hollywood during this period as well as oil production began to boom in Southern California. During World War II, many Californians served in the military while others worked in defense plants helping with wartime production efforts. After World War II ended, California’s population continued to grow rapidly due to people relocating from other states for work opportunities or for its pleasant climate and scenery. Today, California is one of the most populous states in the country with a diverse economy that includes technology companies like Apple and Google as well as entertainment giants such as Disney and Universal Studios Hollywood.
