According to INDEXDOTCOM, the first inhabitants of what is now Connecticut were the Native American tribes of the Algonquian-speaking Mohegan, Niantic, and Pequot. The Dutch and English both explored the area in the early 1600s, but it was not until 1633 that the Dutch established a trading post in what is now Hartford. The English soon came to dominate the region and in 1636 they founded a settlement at Saybrook. In 1662, King Charles II granted a royal charter to Connecticut which allowed it to become an independent colony governed by its own elected representatives. Connecticut was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution. After independence was achieved, Connecticut became a state in 1788. During the 19th century, Connecticut experienced tremendous growth and industrialization as it became an important center for manufacturing and industry. It also played an important role during both World Wars, providing supplies and materials for war efforts on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Today Connecticut is known for its strong economy, high quality of life, and rich history. Check Agooddir for more about Connecticut.
