According to INDEXDOTCOM, Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state to join the United States. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States. The history of Hawaii begins with its original inhabitants, Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands, who arrived in Hawaii around 300-500 AD. They were followed by Tahitian settlers between 1000 and 1200 AD. The first contact with Europeans occurred in 1778 when British explorer Captain James Cook landed on the islands and named them the Sandwich Islands after his patron, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. During this period, a number of European powers vied for control of Hawaii due to its strategic location in the Pacific Ocean. In 1810 King Kamehameha I united all of the islands under his rule and established a monarchy that lasted until 1893 when Queen Liliuokalani was deposed by a group of American businessmen and politicians who declared themselves to be a provisional government. In 1898, Hawaii became an official US territory and remained so until 1959 when it achieved statehood after a referendum was held on the islands. Since then, Hawaii has become one of America’s most popular tourist destinations due to its beautiful beaches, diverse culture, and unique geography. Check Agooddir for more about Hawaii.
