According to INDEXDOTCOM, the history of Maine dates back to the last Ice Age, when it was covered in glaciers. As the glaciers melted, they left behind a rocky coastline and an abundance of natural resources. Native American tribes such as the Wabanaki and Abenaki lived in the region for centuries before European settlers arrived in the 1600s. The first permanent settlement was established by French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604 at Saint Croix Island. In 1620, English settlers arrived and established a trading post at present-day Popham Beach. In 1622, a group of Puritans from England founded what would become known as the Plymouth Colony (now part of Maine). In 1652, Maine became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony and remained so until 1820 when it became its own state after gaining independence from Massachusetts during the War of 1812. Throughout its history, Maine has been an important center for fishing, forestry, and shipbuilding industries. It is also home to many popular tourist attractions such as Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Today, Maine is known for its beautiful coastline and rural landscapes that draw tourists from around the world every year. Check Agooddir for more about Maine.
