According to INDEXDOTCOM, Michigan is a state located in the Midwestern United States. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes including the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi. In 1620, French explorer Etienne Brule became the first European to reach Michigan. The French established trading posts and forts in the area, and France maintained control of the region until 1763 when it was ceded to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris. In 1787, Michigan became part of the Northwest Territory. In 1805, it was divided into two separate territories: Michigan Territory and Indiana Territory. In 1837, Michigan became the 26th state admitted to the Union. The early years of statehood were marked by conflict over land rights between Native Americans and white settlers. During this period, many Native Americans were forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands to reservations in Oklahoma and other areas west of Michigan’s borders. During the 19th century, Michigan experienced a period of rapid growth due to its abundance of natural resources such as copper, iron ore, timber, and oil. The opening of several canals helped make transportation easier throughout the state. This led to increased immigration from Europe which helped fuel population growth throughout Michigan’s cities and towns. Since then, Michigan has become an industrial powerhouse with a strong focus on manufacturing automobiles, aerospace technology, defense systems manufacturing, medical research and technology development. It has also become home to many major universities such as University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Michigan State University in East Lansing which have helped shape its culture into what it is today – a vibrant mix of modernity with traditional values that make it one of America’s most unique states.
