According to INDEXDOTCOM, Minnesota is a state located in the Midwestern and northern regions of the United States. It was explored by French fur traders in the late 1600s and became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The area was opened to settlers after the War of 1812, and Minnesota achieved statehood in 1858 as the 32nd state. The early history of Minnesota is marked by Native American influence, particularly from the Dakota and Ojibwe tribes who had lived there for centuries. In addition to hunting and fishing, they established trading posts along waterways such as Lake Superior and engaged with European traders. In 1679, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, explored present-day Minnesota for France and claimed it as part of New France. In 1837, a treaty between Native Americans and the US government opened up much of present-day Minnesota to settlement. This led to a period of rapid growth and development throughout much of the 19th century. The St. Paul area quickly grew into a commercial hub due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major rivers, while Minneapolis grew into an industrial center thanks to its abundant natural resources like lumber and iron ore. During this time period, Minnesota experienced significant growth in population with many immigrants settling in cities like St. Paul and Minneapolis for job opportunities or land for farming or logging purposes. By 1900, almost 1 million people called Minnesota home – an increase from just 6500 people at statehood in 1858 – making it one of the fastest growing states at that time period. Since then, Minnesota has maintained its status as an economic powerhouse thanks to robust industries such as agriculture (especially dairy farming), manufacturing (particularly aerospace products), finance (including banking giants Wells Fargo & Co., U.S. Bancorp), technology (such as IBM’s Rochester facility) and healthcare (including Mayo Clinic). Today it is known for its progressive politics and thriving economy that have earned it nicknames such as “The North Star State” or “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” .
