According to INDEXDOTCOM, the history of New York begins with the first known inhabitants, the Native American Algonquins. The area was inhabited by these tribes for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in the 16th century. Henry Hudson explored what is now known as the Hudson River in 1609, and Dutch settlers established a trading post on Manhattan Island in 1624. The English conquered New Netherland in 1664 and renamed it New York. In 1788, New York became the 11th state to ratify the US Constitution, and was the first capital of the United States after Washington DC was established in 1790. In 1825, the Erie Canal opened, connecting Lake Erie to the Hudson River and greatly increasing trade between upstate and downstate New York. The 19th century saw an influx of immigrants from Europe, transforming NYC into one of America’s most diverse cities. The 20th century saw further growth in population and industry as well as an expansion of NYC’s influence over culture and commerce worldwide.
