According to INDEXDOTCOM, North Carolina has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the 16th century. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Carolina were Spanish explorers, who landed in 1584. They were followed by British settlers in the early 1700s, and the area became a royal colony of the British crown until 1776, when it declared its independence from Great Britain. In 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and joined the Union as part of the original 13 colonies. During this time, cotton was an important crop in North Carolina’s agricultural economy, and slavery was an accepted practice throughout much of the state. After slavery was abolished following the Civil War, North Carolina transitioned into a more industrialized economy with industries such as tobacco production and textiles becoming important sources of income for many citizens. In more modern times, North Carolina has become known for its universities and colleges as well as for its technology industry with Research Triangle Park in Raleigh-Durham being home to some of America’s largest technology companies such as IBM and Cisco Systems. Additionally, tourism has become an increasingly important part of the state’s economy over recent decades with visitors flocking to attractions such as Outer Banks beaches or Appalachian Mountains hiking trails each year.
