According to INDEXDOTCOM, Rhode Island was the first of the original thirteen colonies to declare its independence from Britain on May 4, 1776. The colony was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a religious dissenter who had been banished from Massachusetts for his views. Williams named the area Rhode Island after the Greek Isle of Rhodes and established a government with an elected assembly. In 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original thirteen colonies to ratify the United States Constitution and was admitted as a state on May 29th of that year. The Industrial Revolution brought about significant changes in Rhode Island’s economy in the nineteenth century, with manufacturing becoming its primary industry. This period also saw waves of immigration from Europe that transformed Rhode Island’s demographics and culture. In recent decades, Rhode Island has become known for its diverse economy and vibrant cultural scene, which includes some of America’s oldest historic sites, like Newport and Providence.
