According to INDEXDOTCOM, the area now known as Washington has been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 12,000 years. Evidence of their presence can still be found throughout the state. In 1775, the first European explorers arrived in what is now Washington. The British and Spanish explored the region in search of fur and other resources. In 1818, the U.S. and Britain signed a treaty to establish a shared border between their two countries, which included most of present-day Washington. In 1853, Washington Territory was officially established with its capital located in Olympia. During this time, settlers began to arrive and establish farms and communities throughout the territory. The population continued to grow rapidly through the late 1800s as more settlers arrived from across the United States and around the world. In 1889, Washington became the 42nd state to join the Union following a vote by Congress. In 1901, President William McKinley designated Mount Rainier as a national park, making it one of America’s first national parks. Over the next century, Washington experienced significant growth in population and industry due to its diverse economy which includes agriculture, timber production, fishing, technology and tourism industries among others. Today Washington is home to over 7 million people who enjoy its majestic mountainscapes, lush forests and vibrant cities like Seattle and Spokane among many others.
