According to Directoryaah, US 24 is a US Highway in the US state of Illinois. The road forms an east-west route through the center of the state, from the town of Quincy on the Missouri border through Peoria to Sheldon on the Indiana border. The road is 411 kilometers long.

In the town of Quincy, US 24 in Missouri crosses the Mississippi River from Kansas City via the Bayview Bridge and enters the state of Illinois. The road runs in 2×2 lanes through the 40,000-population town, before crossing Interstate 172 on its east side. After Quincy Regional Airport, the road narrows to one lane and begins a 120-mile route to Peoria. The area through which US 24 runs consists of plateaus with shallow river valleys with forest. After about 70 kilometers you reach Rushville, where the intersection with US 67is. US 24 heads northeast, parallel to the Illinois River. At the hamlet of Duncans Mills you cross US 136. US 24 follows a moderately varied route along the Illinois River to the town of Peoria.

Just before Peoria the road widens to 2×2 lanes and the town is reached from the southwest. First, it connects to Interstate 474, Peoria’s southern bypass. Then the road continues straight through downtown and then crosses Interstate 74. A little further north, US 24 crosses the Illinois River and then follows a long straight route east. US 24 narrows again after Germantown Hills to one lane in each direction and then continues east across the vast bare plains. There will be no major towns left on the route in Illinois, although the Indiana border is still about 180 kilometers away. It does cross a number of Interstate Highways, the first being theInterstate 39 at the village of El Paso. A little further on you cross the Interstate 55. Another 60 kilometers further, at Gilman, one crosses Interstate 57. Parallel to this highway runs the US 45, which one then crosses. Through the endless plains, the road then continues via Watseka to Sheldon, where US 52 merges from Kankakee. Then the border with Indiana follows and the US 24 in Indiana continues to Fort Wayne.


US 24 was created in 1926 and then ran on its current route through central Illinois. Since there is only one major city on the route, US 24 has not been replaced by an Interstate Highway, most of the route is also single-lane, except around Peoria. In 1987 the Bayview Bridge opened at Quincy.

Traffic intensities

About 9,000 vehicles cross the Mississippi River every day, which then drops to about 4,000 vehicles, later 1,500 vehicles towards Peoria. In Peoria, this rises to about 17,000 vehicles, before dropping to 3,000 vehicles east of the city, and 4,600 vehicles cross the Indiana border daily.

At East Clinton, US 30 in Iowa enters the state of Illinois from Clinton and Cedar Rapids and then heads east with one lane in each direction. This area is quite flat with meadows and farms. There is very little forest. You then pass through the town of Rock Falls, on the Rock River and cross Interstate 88. US 30 then parallels south of I-88 to the east, through a sparsely populated area of ​​mostly meadows. Near the village of Amboy follows the intersection with US 52. US 30 then follows a dead straight route to the east and just west of Shabbona it connects with Interstate 39.

US 30 then runs to the west side of Chicago’s first suburb of Aurora, turns south here, then turns east again, grazing the city on the south side. The routing of US 30 through Illinois has undergone some major changes since the road was created in 1926. The road originally ran through the city of Chicago on several roads that are now state routes. In 1932, US 30 was moved south through the southern suburbs, which were not there then. Between 1932 and 1942, the route between Geneva and Sterling was replaced by a more southerly route that does not pass through larger towns. The old US 30 through Chicago then became US 330 and replaced by Alternate US 30 in 1942, until 1971. In 1959 the route around Aurora was changed, taking a more southerly route. The existing route became Business US 30 until 1970. In 1963 the East-West Tollway was built (today’s Interstate 88) which was then called Toll Route US 30 between 1963 and 1965.

Traffic intensities

Some 13,000 vehicles cross the Mississippi daily, but this drops to 6,000 after East Quincy. In 2007, only 2,400 vehicles paralleled I-88, which gradually ramps up toward Chicago, to 13,900 vehicles just before the metropolitan area. There are 21,000 vehicles on the west side of Aurora, 29,000 vehicles on the south side. Heading for Joliet 29,000 at Plainfield and 26,000 at I-55. In Joliet itself, 12,000 vehicles, and mostly between 20,000 and 25,000 vehicles, drive through the southern suburbs. 36,700 vehicles cross the Indiana border every day.
